The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

At Dentistry of the Queen City, we want to ensure every patient gets the dental care they need. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry. Dr. Greg Reece, a dentist in Charlotte, NC, describes sedation dentistry and its use in our dental office.charlotte, north carolina dentist

What is Sedation Dentistry?

At our dental office, we offer two forms of sedation. First, nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, sedation can be used. This is a gas that’s inhaled throughout your treatment. It takes effect almost as soon as you start breathing it in and wears off just as fast. You’ll be relaxed but alert throughout your procedure. This method allows you to drive yourself to and from your appointment.

We also offer oral sedation in the form of a pill. You’ll be prescribed the pill and instructed to take it about an hour before you come in for your procedure. While the pill isn’t intended to put you to sleep, you may be relaxed enough that you fall asleep or don’t remember portions of your procedure. The pill’s effects can last a while, so you’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

Who is Sedation Dentistry For?

Sedation dentistry is commonly touted as a solution for dental anxiety, also known as dental fear. People who are afraid to go to the dentist may avoid regular dental care. This can lead to more severe dental problems down the road. Sedation allows patients to be calm and get the care they need so that they don’t have severe issues in the future.

Dental work can be a struggle if you have sensitive teeth or a bad gag reflex. Depending on what needs to be done, dental tools can cause pain and discomfort or cause you to gag frequently. Sedation allows your muscles and gag reflex to relax, so the treatment can be done without issues. Sedation and a combination of local anesthetics will help your tooth sensitivity.

Sedation dentistry is a good option for people with certain medical conditions or children. Some children may have trouble staying still throughout a longer dental procedure. Certain medical conditions may make it impossible for patients to sit for a long period of time or to stop moving during treatment. Sedation allows both of these groups to get the treatment they need.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

One of the biggest benefits is ensuring everyone gets the treatment they need. For those with dental anxiety, it means that they don’t have to suffer from further dental issues. If they haven’t been to the dentist in a long time, multiple treatments can be done in one session. This limits the number of those with dental fear who come to our office.

With sedation, dentists can also work faster since the patient is calm. The patient can’t accidentally move or do things subconsciously that may get in the way. Extensive restorative dentistry procedures can be done with ease. You’ll get to experience pain-free treatment where you’re calm and relaxed.
